Study of Geohazards and Critical Underwater Infrastructure funded by the Science & Technology Organization – Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation of NATO
Submarine landslides, debris flows and turbidity currents have been documented to inflict severe damage to submarine infrastructure, such as telecommunications and power cables, pipelines and other offshore installations which in today’s connected world can cause serious disruption to the flow of goods, energy, information and data, impacting people’s lives in many different forms. The study aims to understand the potential impact of natural geohazards to critical underwater infrastructure spanning the North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Risk factors will be evaluated using geospatial tools and numerical models, using historical data of forcing factors such as tropical cyclones and earthquakes, and climate model forecasts, including future climate change scenarios.
